Kanto Cafe & Bakery – Cambridge (UK)

I finally made it to Kanto, the Filipino café and bakery in Cambridge that opened to much acclaim late last year.

Kanto Cafe & Bakery, located at 60 Cherry Hinton Road, have a wonderful selection of Filipino bakes and a couple of Korean ones too. The owners share both their cultures from the Philippines and Korea through their fresh and delicious products.

We ate all the things… the bakes were so good, we brought some home to enjoy later!

Top tips: Double check their opening hours before heading out. Go early as they tend to sell out quickly. It’s a small place with a couple of tables inside and some outside seating. Ideal times are 10am, or 11am when they start serving sandwiches (sandos and sanwits). If driving, the best place to park is at the Cambridge Leisure Park car park. It’s a very short walk to Cherry Hinton Road from there.

Their coffee is excellent. Their matcha is top tier and I loved their refreshing iced blueberry matcha latte (I had mine with oat milk). It’s made using the cheong method – a Korean technique of making syrups and fruit preserves.

We feasted on a variety of Filipino soft and fluffy bakes, many with their signature combination of sweet and savoury:

Ensaymada – brioche with cheddar and buttercream, dusted with sugar and topped with grated edam cheese

Ube Pandesal – purple yam-infused bread with purple yam jam

Calamansi Cinnamon Bun – cinnamon brioche bun with calamansi (citrus fruit) curd

Ube Basque Cheesecake – a creamy purple yam cake with a burnt top

Pandesal (sold in pairs) – a slightly sweet bread roll covered in bread crumbs and Spanish bread – an oblong bread roll covered in bread crumbs with a sweet and buttery filling

The Korean Garlic Cheese Bread, a beautifully-cut buttery, soft brioche filled with slightly sweet cream cheese and dipped in garlic chive butter, was a revelation. They make Kimchi Cheese Twists too but I didn’t try them on this occasion.

Kanto’s fresh bakes, as well as their hot and cold drinks, are well worth scoping out. There was so much more we wanted to try, like the sandwiches. We’ll just have to go back for more!
