On 20 June, Mauro Boero of Olioitalia held an olive oil tasting at Balzano’s in Cambridge. Olioitalia is the importer of high quality extra virgin olive oils from Calabria, Italy. Mauro was raised on his family’s olive grove in Italy so he knows all about olive oil and its health benefits. It’s high in vitamin E, loaded with antioxidants and healthy fats and helps prevent cardio-vascular problems.
Olioitalia, based in Cambridge, is the importer of Pata organic infused extra virgin olive oils in the UK, the Netherlands, Belgium and Luxembourg. The infused olive oils are produced and bottled by Pata with the extra virgin olive oil from their olive grove in Calabria. The olives are of the Ottobratica variety.
Those who have heard me rave about my favourite gin, Pinkster, will understand my sheer delight at being invited to a tour and tasting at Pinkster HQ, near Cambridge. You may have even seen Pinkster’s eye-catching displays in some shops, such as Cambridge Wine Merchants, and at events and fairs. They really do their branding well!
My visit on 15 June was very well organised by Pinkster’s newest team member, Lyndsey Spellman, who is quite the gin connoisseur herself. It was a real treat to have a peek into Pinkster’s premises. I didn’t know what to expect but given the fact that taxis were arranged, I knew there was going to be a lot of gin flowing. Yessss!
On 11 June, I had the pleasure of participating in a tasting tour of Cambridge, organised by Cambridge Food Tour. There are a variety of tours created by Gerla de Boer, Cambridge Food Tour’s founder and passionate foodie. This one was the lunch tour, which lasted 4 hours and took us to some wonderful eateries and fascinating places, some off the beaten track. I’ve lived in Cambridge for over 6 years and Gerla showed me places I had never seen before!
It’s important to note that the places we visited on this particular tour aren’t set in stone. That’s the beauty of it… the food is seasonal and locations can vary, depending on availability.
Gerla is a vivacious and delightful host. She is not only knowledgeable about food… she animated our walk through the streets with several stops, revealing many fascinating tidbits on Cambridge’s history.
