Prana Indian Restaurant, located in the very heart of Mill Road at the corner of Gwydir Street, is one of my favourite Cambridge restaurants. My husband Paulo and I have been regular customers for almost 10 years now, since its relaunch after an extensive refurbishment. Prana’s elegant yet relaxed ambience, coupled with a delicious menu, means it always merits a return visit.
Paulo and I recently had a discussion about what to order at our favourite restaurants. Do you stick to your tried-and-true dishes, or order something new? At Prana, whilst we have tried and enjoyed many of their dishes, our go-to order goes something like this:
Accompaniments:
Papadums with chutney selection tray.
Appetisers:
Onion Bhajee (they’re huge!) and Alvi’s Specials (delicately spiced succulent chicken that has been skewered and grilled).
Poultry:
Green Murgh Curry (a strip of chicken breast cooked with broccoli, baby aubergine, coconut milk and aromatic ground spices) and Murgh Jalfraizi (chicken strips in hot spices with shallots, capsicum, fresh chilli, fresh herbs and coriander). Can you guess which order is mine?
Rice:
Aromatic and delicately spiced Pulao Rice – big enough for 2 to share.
Breads:
Garlic Naan with crushed garlic (for Paulo) and a Plain naan (for me).
Drinks:
Cobra beer (for Paulo) and a glass of white wine or a soft drink (for me).
It’s worth noting that the menu includes some great vegetarian and vegan options too.
I heartily recommend Prana for your next curry feast. If you need to get there by car, don’t let the Mill Road bridge closure deter you. Just plan your trip – there is plenty of free parking on the side streets (on both sides of the bridge). The Gwydir Street car park is right across the street from Prana and the Queen Anne Terrace car park (at Parkside pool) is just a short walk to the restaurant. It’s also a 10-minute leisurely stroll from Cambridge’s train station.
Top tip: Ask how you can get on Prana’s email list. They have some great exclusive offers, including their take-aways.
My visit is based on my experience at my own cost and I did not receive compensation for my review.
