I’ve been raving about Steak & Honour for years and have been stalking tracking their burger van since it first hit the streets of Cambridge a few years ago. It was so popular, a second Citroen H van was added to keep up with the demand for their delicious gourmet burgers. In January 2017, Steak & Honour launched the long awaited restaurant on Wheeler Street, next door to the Corn Exchange.
Cambridge is burger heaven with Steak & Honour’s two vans trading at various locations as well as the bricks and mortar site. There is even a handy Steak & Honour app to keep track of their daily schedules and receive restaurant offers and rewards.
The restaurant reflects the street food experience with its open kitchen so you can see the chefs in action while you are queueing or waiting for your meal. There are about 40 seats spread out over three floors, mostly on the first and second floors up the colourful stairs.
The queues can be long and the seating gets taken up fast so get your order to go or, better yet, visit at off-peak times. The bright and cheerful S&H themed interior is worth checking out, especially the interchangeable “burger face” boards. Paulo and I were delighted to take part in the project so if you spot our burger faces, send me a photo or tag me on social media!

Steak & Honour’s restaurant menu is more comprehensive than what the vans offer. The menu includes the S&H “staples”: their addictive fries, the Classic burger with a Riverside beef patty, lettuce, onion, gherkin, French’s mustard and Heinz tomato ketchup as well as the Cheeseburger (add American cheese). Double up by adding an extra patty. For those who don’t eat meat, the menu features the ‘Shroom burger (flat mushroom topped with American cheese). All of the burgers are nestled in a soft brioche bun.
Available on a regular basis at the restaurant are One For Ella, featuring a 180g patty, American cheese, smoked bacon and their tasty burger sauce as well as the very spicy Some Like It Hot with a180g patty, American cheese, jalapeño, onion and S&H hot sauce. I’ve tasted both these burgers and they are awesome! Their Check The Pulse bean burger with American cheese, beetroot pickle, onion and seaweed mayo is another popular meatless option.
The restaurant menu also features ‘Slaw with white & red cabbage, carrot, onion and sour cream mayo. I’ve had this before as a special in the burger van and it’s delicious! Good to see it’s available at the restaurant.
Brand new on the menu is the Mac & Cheese: elbow macaroni with American cheese, cheddar and emmental, which has been flattened, cut into rectangular strips and briefly fried. It’s full of cheesy goodness with a bit of crunch for texture and a hint of spice (from an ingredient containing mustard powder) offset by a squirt of sour cream.
Soft drinks, coffee and a few different beers are available to complement your meal. The Steak & Honour restaurant is a fun place to visit but most of all, it’s a permanent home for some of the best burgers out there. Proud to have such a wonderful independent business in Cambridge, one that is destined for greatness with their winning burgers.
The owners, managers or staff did not invite me to visit this establishment and were unaware that my experience would be the basis of a written review. It is based on my experience at my own cost and I did not receive compensation for my review.
